I don’t believe in the kind of magic in my books. But I do believe something
very magical can happen when you read a good book. —J.K. Rowling

Island Books

Now that I am sixty, I think it's time I stop worrying so much about those clouds on life's horizon (which very seldom rain on me) and start appreciating the brief hour of brilliant sunshine and spring green that seems to occur every afternoon in April. After all, it's poetry month, the garden's blooming, and the days are longer. Who can complain? It's the season of the unexpected bright flower, of morning bird song, of renewed exercise, summer dreams, and love.

Last night I read a love story. It takes place in a bookstore named "Island Books" and features a curmudgeonly bookseller, his precocious daughter, lots of plot twists, and a warmhearted community.

There are enough obvious similarities to make me worry (especially since the bookseller dies in the end) but remember, I have resolved to look on the bright side. And the bright side is that the author, Gabrielle Zevin, has captured the way that bookstores are magnets for those of us who cherish stories. And how stories collected and shared over time make a life and a community. Gabrielle will be stopping by our "Island Books" on April 7th at 10am for a brief signing and chat. If you love bookstores, you should stop by and pick up a copy of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. I'll have coffee and pastries and a bemused look on my face. It will be just one of those spring moments of warmth and serendipity that we need to look out for.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Roger Page

Goofing Off at Work

Nancy loves toys that shout, "Go Outside!" Among some other pretty spectacular toys she's brought to our shelves, the Mini Flyer Infrared Flying Saucer is the most addictive. You really have to experience it to get the sheer giddiness that ensues while playing with this thing. Watch this clip and see why she isn't getting any work done.

Cindy's April Pick

The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon left Cindy both excited and disturbed. A dystopian novel that depicts the world after the books, newspapers, and magazines have ceased to exist, this vision of a future where our lives are entirely ruled by technology serves as a cautionary and thought-provoking tale.

Reading-Related Rambles

In March, we pondered the literary images conjured by The Sleepwalker, a hyperrealistic statue installed out of doors on the Wellesley College campus, examined novels that predicted the future, and read our way back to Ireland in honor of St. Paddy's Day.
