Island Books

Over the course of the last few weeks there has been much love and support of the purchase of Island Books. While many have said “You are living my dream,” I confess I never knew my life would go in this direction.

I have loved going to bookstores ever since I was a child. Victor and I have raised our family in other areas and here on Mercer Island, and my interest in owning Island Books is due to a passion for this community. I fell in love with the idea of owning an institution that my friends and neighbors so embraced and supported.

Maria, my beloved mother-in-law, introduced me to Island Books when I first started dating Victor over 20 years ago, and I’ve been a regular gift and book shopper ever since. I was one of those moms, waiting at the door on a Saturday morning to get the last minute birthday party or hostess gifts. It’s a dream come true to be able to say I own what Island Books is to this neighborhood and beyond. I am excited and honored for what the future holds.

Here are 10 things you might not know about me:

1) Some of my all-time favorite books include Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, and Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple.
2) I am an avid People magazine reader and swear by their book reviews (every summer one of the 5 books I read on vacation is from Elin Hilderbrand).
3) I love York Peppermint Patties. I have been known to steal and replenish Marilyn’s stash on a weekly basis.
4) The staff can’t read my 7s and 8s.
5) For the last 2 years, my 3 daughters and I have participated in the Lithuanian Community Choir, visiting Lithuania last summer for the Song Festival. It was a priceless experience.
6) I make my son come in the store to take the trash/recycling out so I can see him during the day.
7) I am the second of three people named Laurie or Lori currently on the staff.
8) In my family, I am not the cool parent.
9) My girls dress better than I do.
10) Next to parenting, this is the best job I’ve ever had.

Now, it's my turn to learn more about you, our customers and friends. There have been many questions asked about what's ahead and I would love to answer them in person. Join me at the store on Thursday, August 13th at 6pm for cocktails and appetizers. Come say hello and introduce yourself or just come in for a drink on a Thursday night. I'm looking forward to seeing you!

Incite a Read-o-lution

Encouraging teens to make an effort requires finesse, and often recommending anything too directly makes it automatically uncool. But if you can subtly plant books that will appeal to them around the house, they can read on their own terms when they are ready. Here are some titles we think teens will relate to and enjoy.

Cindy's August Pick

Cindy's pick this month is Atomic Farmgirl by Teri Hein. A memoir about childhood in rural Eastern Washington, there's an Erin Brockovich element to this story. The Hanford Nuclear Reservation was only 30 miles north from Hein's idyllic farm life. Politics and a unique ambiance make this coming-of-age tale stand out on the shelf.

Reading-Related Rambles

When the weather is so hot, July can be a sleepy time around here. We still blogged through the lazy days of summer, discussing the simple but smart lessons from local treasure Nancy Stewart, how the right piece of fiction can mediate a marital dispute, and more good news (besides the sale) for our beloved staff.

Our August selection is Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. We’ve been stewing over this book for a long time and now that it's finally here, everyone has a strong opinion. Whether you're a regular at our book club or a first-timer, please join us for a community gathering in honor of the book of the moment and that other book, the one that has helped define American literature.

Did you know that Island Books hosts an open book club that meets the last Thursday of each month at 7:30pm? All are welcome to attend, and if you purchase your book here in the store you'll always get a 10% discount. This month we expect a particularly spirited discussion!

Someone at a local organization for seniors recently asked us which books were currently popular with the silver-haired set. We thought our answer was worth sharing here.
