As you may know, we consider Island Books to be more than just a bookstore. We consider it a community gathering place and hub for thoughtful discussions on a wide variety of topics. Unfortunately, COVID has changed that dynamic for us; however, we continue to adjust to the changing environment as we have for nearly 50 years. During the 2019 election, we offered each of the MI City Council Candidates an opportunity to participate in a series of “Meet and Greet the Candidate” events at Island Books. We are doing the same for the 2021 elections; in addition, this year we will also be extending this offer for MI School Board Candidates during this election.
Our vision is to offer both voters and candidates the opportunity to discuss their vision for Mercer Island and share their views on the key issues for the city in a more informal setting, with a different format, and a more casual forum (on a series of weeknights & a few Sundays late afternoons). Because of the current COVID situation, we will offer this in a hybrid model. We'll set up the store in author event style and host each candidate for a 1 hour 15-minute sessions limited to 20 people in person; for those people who are unable to attend in person, we will also simultaneously host the event on Zoom. For those people attending the event in person in the store, we will follow COVID guidance for masks and social distancing as we always do in the store. We will also require proof of vaccination for anyone attending in person.
Each candidate will have the opportunity to present, take questions and casually mingle with the attendees. There will be no debate time or moderator for these sessions. The candidates are free to use the time as they wish. We hope you can join us for these informative community events.
Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org for the session(s) you would like to attend in person.
