It’s finally (almost) here! Our Golden Jubilee, our 50th Anniversary as a Mercer Island landmark. A place where generations of families have walked through the doors and browsed for hours upon hours, year after year. Shopped for gifts, brought their kids—and then grandkids—to storytime and to romp in the playhouse in our kids' section. Where newcomers wander in days after moving to Mercer Island (or sometimes a few years in, we’re not judging) and are thrilled to find a thriving independent bookstore right on their doorstep. Where conversations between book lovers turn into stacks of recommendations. It’s been so delightful to meander down memory lane with Miriam in our 50 Years of Island Books series, and see how this iconic bookstore came to be, and meet the many wonderful people that have shaped it since 1973.
And now we are so pleased to invite you, the Island Books community, to join us in a celebration of Island Books on Saturday November 4th, from open ‘til close (9am to 6pm)!
You can start the celebration early -- beginning on Monday 10/30, we'll be collecting receipts from any purchase $29.99 or more, to be entered in our hourly drawing on Saturday 11/4. Prizes will include Island Books gift cards, Island Books sweatshirts, and other fun Island Books goodies!
On party day, we’ll start with our traditional Saturday morning Storytime with Nancy Stewart, geared towards our littlest book lovers.
Then get those witty words ready, because the famous typewriters will be down and stocked with fresh ribbons and sheaves of paper. Your prompt is either "Favorite Island Books memory" or "What does Island Books mean to you?" We're looking forward to what you come up with!
We'll have a scavenger hunt, and some special custom stickers for you to record how long you’ve been buying books with us (start thinking about when that was).
If you stop in wearing Island Books gear, we'll give you 10% off your total purchase, so dig out those hoodies, hats and t-shirts!
We'll have 50 customizable tiles for purchase, first come first serve. At $50 each, the money will go to support BINC (Book Industry Charitable Foundation) and World Central Kitchen. The tiles will become part of our playhouse back in the kid's section, a permanent way to celebrate your love of Island Books.
And of course, no party is complete without some sweet treats and a bit of bubbly! We can’t wait to see all your familiar faces and say thank you for 50 amazing years.
