We love story time at Island Books and have had a strong traditions of hosting multiple Story Times during the month. On this page you can find out what Story Time events are happening and a little bit more about our story tellers!
Our weekly story time is held on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am for children 4 and under. There are books read and often songs sung. Since we have had to enforce social distancing and safe gathering during the pandemic, Nancy Stewart has done virtual story times! Find all of the videos here.
Saturday Storytelling Series:
Island Books is proud to present some of the best professional storytellers in the Pacific Northwest. On the first Saturday of each month, September through June, they transform our space with folktales, contemporary stories, and fantastic songs at 6pm. This session is for kids 4 and up, led by a different storyteller each month.
Here is a schedule of the upcoming Storytelling Series...
February, 1st, 2020
Anne Rutherford has been a storyteller most of her life. Along the way she's had some pretty amazing accomplishments- including being four-time 1st-place winner at the Northwest Folklife Festival Liar’s Contest in Seattle! She also took the grand prize in the NW Tall Tale Challenge in 2016 (ask her how big her trophies are). Her storytelling takes her all over the country, and she is always happy when it takes her to Island Books. She’ll share her favorite funny tales of tricksters from all around the world. www.annerutherford.com
Margaret Read MacDonald
Margaret Read MacDonald is an internationally acclaimed storyteller, folklorist, and prolific author of children's books. She has published more than sixty-five books of stories and books about storytelling, which have been translated into many languages. Her workshops have made the art of storytelling accessible to countless teachers and librarians around the world, as she shares her passion for "tellable" tales. She performs year-round and we're always lucky when she has time to stop by Island Books- usually on her way to or from a faraway land!
April 4, 2020
Pat Peterson is a seasoned storyteller and like most of our storytellers, is a member of the Seattle Storytellers Guild. For years she has told at Island Books and never tires of "all those faces looking up." When Pat tells a story it's like a visit from a favorite conspiratorial relative who has the best stories that are just a bit mischievous! It is her hope that some nugget of a story or song will go home with the listeners--a perfect souvenir of a cozy evening!
Katherine Gee Perrone
Katherine Gee Perrone is an award-winning storyteller for children and adults, a theatre teacher, a singer/songwriter, a published author, and an award-winning playwright. She has a crisp storytelling style punctuated by songs sung in her clear, sweet voice. She is just plain fun!
Norm Brecke is a spirited storyteller who revels in telling a good story. His music, zeal, and humor are infectious! When Norm tells ... people listen, and often join in. Norm specializes in folktales, always adding his own unique style. His personal stories always reflect his Northwest roots. Norm is often accompanied by his guitar but sometimes plays ukulele, banjo, or mouth harp to add to his stories. Though Norm now makes his home in Portland, he always makes time to stop by Island Books and has been known to try out a new song or story on the spot!
