Join us on Tuesday, July 18th, for for what we hope is the first of many movie nights at Island Books. We'll be screening Persuasion, an adptation of Jane Austen's final novel, directed by Roger Mitchell and starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. Set mainly in Bath, England, it's a classic Austen comedy, albeit more somber and mature than you might expect if you've only seen (or read) her frothier early work. Rather than idealized first love, the theme here is reunion and realistic expectation, as two lovers separated by time and circumstance must decide if they're ready to start again.
It's not the best-known Austen adaptation but it may be the best, and it's even more interesting in comparison with her orginal novel. If you haven't done it before now, pick up a copy and read it ahead of time to see what we mean. And if you have another favorite book that's been turned into a movie, let us know and we'll try to put it on our calendar.
