"I get crazy in a bookstore. It makes my heart beat hard because I want to buy everything." —Reese Witherspoon

Island Books

At the moment, I'm busy with a stack of books that I've been wanting to read for the last two months. It's a little weird during the holiday season, and especially in December, to shelve, sell, and send out the door so many wonderful books without the opportunity to take some home to devour.

On the evening of the 24th, after a stiff whiskey with the staff, the missus and I wrap up a tall stack of stories and cookbooks we've had our eyes on. For the next two weeks, we will read and read and read, go to a movie, eat, and read. My adult children have grown up with this seasonal feasting. Almost reflexively, we all retreat to our beds with an armload like a family of hibernating bears. Let it snow, let it rain. It doesn't matter. We keep reading.

So lately, if I tell you I'm not sure whether it's Tuesday or Wednesday, cut me some slack. It's probably better you don't bother me at all 'til I find out what happens next, because I'm busy with a book.

Many thanks to all of you for a cheerful and prosperous season,
Roger Page

Our Biggest Bestsellers of 2013!

Last month we gave you our favorite books of the year. Now comes an even more revealing best-of list, straight from the best judges of all: our customers.

Miriam's January Pick:

Under the Wide and Starry Sky

We read a lot, and despite ourselves, we're guilty of playing favorites.

For example, this month Miriam is excited about Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan, a work of historical fiction about the love affair between Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife, Fanny. Stevenson was the author of classics such as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Treasure Island, and spent much of his life at sea pursuing better health. Fanny became his caretaker and biggest support system. Their romance made his career possible and led them across the globe.

Here, our booksellers share their other January recommendations.

Reading-Related Rambles

In December, James wrapped up his 2013 epic Dance to the Music of Time book club and discussed the runners-up to our best of the year lists. Miriam waxed nostalgic about her dancing days with books about The Nutcracker and reviewed our quirkiest booklists from 2013. That's only a sample of our long-windedness, so if you want more you can also get our Store Journal by email.
