Island Books

By some twist of fate, my high school senior got accepted into college early this year. On a December day, we got the letter and my daughter did a dance and my wife and I let out huge sighs of relief. Little did we know that this meant that "Senior Spring" would bloom in January. It's as though a switch turned off in my daughter’s ears. She smiles and nods and comes home to roost at the end of the day but anything we say seems to float right by her. She's numb to us—happy, oblivious, and untethered by parental constraints. This came as a bit of a surprise but I am adjusting to it because I have had some practice. I have Island Books. One of the remarkable qualities of our staff is that they average about 15 years of service here at the store and they have had previous experience at other bookstores. Like my daughter they pretty much know what to do and don't have a lot of use for me. (Ergo: our success.) They nod and smile, but my commands float by without disturbing their hairdos. Sometimes I envision them as group of bookstore cats. They each command their own high perch and need to be approached with caution and a sense of one's place in the order of things. In my old age, I have become wise to their ways and have decided to formally celebrate their independence. I am declaring that this month be known as "March Madness." Employees Rule! The cats can play. An entire month (in the words of Cindy) of "Rampant and Whimiscal Discounts." On Saturday March 24th (my birthday), all hell will break loose, while I sit at home eating cake and tending to my own affairs. March in and join us all month to see what they're up to and be sure not to miss celebrating my absence.

Catch up on recent posts, like James's step beyond Dowton Abbey towards other gems that take a democratic interest in British life; Miriam's example of why communicating with each other about the books we're reading can lead to unexpected purchases; and a video of author and bookseller Ann Patchett on the Colbert Report.

By the way, did you know you can get our Store Journal by email?

The World of WorkThe World of Work

The Paycheck Isn't Half of It

Work is a four-letter word. Books about the working world are a little longer than that and a lot more entertaining than the real thing.

Cindy's March Pick:

We read a lot, and despite ourselves, we're guilty of playing favorites. For example, this month Cindy's excited about a book about the power of introverts. Here, our booksellers share their March recommendations.
