"Let's be reasonable and add an eighth day to the week that is devoted exclusively to reading."
Lena Dunham

Island Books

Our staff recently gathered to toast the end of summer, and despite some recent respites of warm weather, we all agreed that autumn is here. Fall is my favorite season and I think it's one of the best times for reading. The crackly smell of the air, the beautiful colors of the leaves, and the light that comes at the end of the day make the perfect setting to curl up with a good book. Our stacks are high right now and there aren’t enough moments in the day.

There are some intriguing books coming out in the next few weeks, including Humans of New York: Stories by Brandon Stanton (if you haven't seen the blog or followed on Facebook, have a look. It's a striking series that has over 15 million followers for good reason), the first full-color and beautifully illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and The Secret Chordthe new historical novel about King David from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks.

You can go beyond the scope of our book recommendations by taking a look at what the local book clubs are reading. If you didn't already know, we gladly highlight other clubs in the store and order multiple copies for the group. Book club participants always get a 10% discount on their chosen titles. Speaking of book clubs, we would like to start a special store book club just for young adults. Let us know if you’re interested!

Beside all the reading to be done, there are many good reasons to spend time in the store in October. We'll be welcoming several authors, including Cynthia Shifrin, Eric Elnes, and Michael Schein (see our events calendar on the right). There will be PJ Story Time and weekly Wednesday Storybook Corners for the little ones, including a special one with author Alexandra Day, author of the Good Dog, Carl series (and her dog!) and of course our Open Book Club. We are also making the first Thursday of the month our new Sip and Shop night. After 5pm, we’ll offer a complimentary glass of wine while you browse. Come by, clink glasses, and tell us what you'll be reading.

Fiction Finalists

The Man Booker Prize, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2013 after launching in 1969, aims to promote the finest in fiction by rewarding the best novel of the year written in English and published in the United Kingdom. Here are this year's top contenders.

Miriam's October Pick

It was hot in the publishing industry before it even hit stores, and Miriam's happy to report that Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal is as good as the hype. Quirky and hilarious, this debut novel tells the story of an orphaned girl's rise to expert chef in the kitchens of Minnesota. It offers a gleeful satire of the foodies and yet manages to paint an emotional and satisfying culinary picture of the region, all while touching our hearts.
