Island Books

The rain has finally returned after an unseasonably hot and dry summer. Our staff and customers are finishing the last of their summer vacations, returning reinvigorated for a good fall season here at the store. We have a new staff member too, Lori Robinson, who you will all get to know and love. And lately, I have been thinking about wishes and what they were like to make as a kid. Whether it was finding a penny on the ground, saying the same thing at the same time as a friend (jinx!), or just writing something fifty times in your diary, there was always a sense that you might actually be able to will your dream to life. I want to bring that feeling to the store.

While things have been lazy and quiet in town, we've been plotting. It started with our plan to collect wishes on our wish board pictured here. Our goal for the coming school year: how can we find new ways to give you what you need from your local bookstore? The suggestions are pouring in, and we hope next time you are in the store you will add your own sticky note to the board.

We also have some new ideas, many coming directly from your feedback. In particular, we want to reenergize our monthly bookclub and increase involvement with our best community asset: our children. Read on in the newsletter for more information, but the biggest change will be starting in mid-September when we add a weekly Wednesday morning story time for our youngest readers.

There's plenty of good author events, a Labor Day sidewalk sale, and other stuff coming too, including page-turning new books from Jonathan Franzen, JoJo Moyes, Lee Child, Margaret Atwood, and more. We always have a fresh selection of handpicked toys, gifts, and cards. And as ever, we offer ourselves as your enduring friends, booksellers, and neighborhood chatterboxes.

So as autumn falls upon us, we hope you'll come by and share your feedback. What is your wish for Island Books?

Building Bookstore Memories for Kids

Our bookstore is meant for people of all ages, but we particularly love to make it a special place for kids. In addition to our monthly PJ Story Times, starting in mid-September we are adding a weekly Wednesday morning story corner. A staff member will read a rotating selection of picture books, and we welcome further suggestions for making this event a nice weekly addition to your child's routine.

Open Book Club

We like to discuss books with you over the counter, but what's even better is when you all get together to rehash a good title. In the spirit of enhancing a great read, we host an open book club that meets the last Thursday of each month at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend even if you haven't read the book, and if you purchase your copy here you'll always get a 10% discount. Check our events calendar for current selections!

Kay's September Pick

Lately Kay's been recommending the final book in Amitav Ghosh's Ibis trilogy, Flood of Fire. Following a varied cast of characters from India to China, through the outbreak of the First Opium War and China's devastating defeat, to Britain's seizure of Hong Kong, this richly detailed and sweeping novel completes Ghosh's unprecedented reenvisioning of the nineteenth-century war on drugs.
